About Rock

Beginning in 1970 I worked in the construction industry—building commercial and retail buildings. I also was interested in and began working in photography and early IBM mainframe gear. My initial school interests were centered on architecture and basic design techniques. I went to Salt Lake Trade Tech to study architecture in 1975-76 and building concepts at University of Utah to further my education in 1976-77. After leaving school, and for the next thirty years, I worked in the oil and gas industry, and in the commercial construction sector. During this time I also worked on many early data center construction projects.

I worked extensively with and developed an appreciation for industrial electrical generators, UPS equipment, and cooling towers. In the early 80’s I also began a lifelong interest in the desktop computer and the computer industry in general. By that time I had purchased my first computer—a Commodore 64 and later moved to a PC and the world of DOS. Over the next ten years I became interested in networking with windows 3.0 and received Microsoft System Engineering certifications for NT 3.51, NT 4.0 and MCSE 2000.

My interest in the network engineering certifications was motivated primarily to understand the needs and future upgrade requirements for data center construction. By blending my interest and understanding of architecture, construction, and electrical systems—along with cooling and network operations, I am able to work across all disciplines necessary to design and construct world-class data center facilities.

Over the last twenty years I have developed methodology and procedures to help my clients achieve high levels of data center efficiency as well as minimize the carbon footprint of those facilities. In many cases my clients have achieved long-term savings on power consumption with minimal increase of the cost of construction.
